This is a sermon given for the Church of Springfield, on Independence Day Weekend, during our annual Outdoor Worship Service.
Q. Do you think of yourself as basically selfless, or selfish? How do you justify that self-concept? Would others agree with you? What would they say if you asked them?
Q. What does the word “humility” stir up in you? Do you feel positive emotions (aspiration, peace, happiness), or negative emotions (resentment, anger, resistance)? Why do you think you feel that way?
Q. Can you think of someone you know who makes you feel important? How do they do that? Thank them this week with that same thoughtful gesture.
May God build up Christ’s Church in Christ’s Spirit and Christ’s mindset of humility, “that the world may know” (John 17:23) that Christ is Lord.
