This song perfectly sums up the sermon series we just completed, considering the “voice of Jesus / On the cross of Calvary.”

What, in particular, has stood out to you this Lent/Good Friday/Easter season?

For me, it was a new appreciation for all that Christ actually accomplished for us: the forgiveness of sins, yes, and also the full revelation of God’s perfect love for us, the perfect bearing of our human suffering and sin, and the complete victory over sin, death, and the powers of Satan!

That means that the cross is everything. And maybe that is obvious to you. But maybe you’ve taken that for granted. Let this song’s lyrics guide you back again to the cross of our Lord Jesus in wonder and thankfulness.

Death was once my great opponent

Fear once had a hold on me

But the Son who died to save us

Rose that we would be free indeed!

Free from every plan of darkness

free to live and free to love

death is dead and Christ is risen

It was finished upon that cross!

For this reason, then:

Whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

Philippians 3:7-11
