This is the fourth sermon in Emmanuel’s sermon series “The Mothers of Jesus,” preached on Sunday, December 30, 2018.

Bathsheba endures terrible loss and grief with quiet grace, allowing God to shine through the weak points in her life to transform King David, to shape King Solomon, and to pave the way for King Jesus. May we be brave enough to do the same.

Bathsheba’s story can be found in 2 Samuel 11-12, and 1 Kings 1-2. Of course, because these stories are largely focused on King David, we also have to infer a lot of information that is not written, reading between the lines, to discover Bathsheba’s story. Francine Rivers’ book Unspoken is a well-researched, thoughtful (if fictional!) exploration of what Bathsheba may have experienced, if you are looking for further reading on her life and character.

May God bless you and keep you in the new year!
